NSFW Weekends: Girls and Porn

14 May

By now, a lot of you have probably seen this College Humor video:

(sorry the video isn’t embedded, but apparently WordPress doesn’t like their code….)

If you haven’t seen it, it raises certain questions.

  1. Why is it still a joke/something-to-be-made-fun-of if a girl likes porn?
  2. Why is it still okay to make fun of the girl who watches porn “too much” or likes the “weird stuff”?

If this is an attempt to make fun of our social stigmatization of sex, our own Puritannical tendancies that are holding on for dear life, it does just as much to show how hard some of those beliefs are to break.

Let’s look at one of the most common issues poked fun at: anal sex.

Now, I’m not going to say anything about my personal preferences or others, because it shouldn’t matter. But that’s precisely the point.

Most women (and a large number of men, I’m sure) have been in a situation where conversation might casually turn toward sexual practices. You know those conversations, sometimes you’ve had a few drinks or maybe you’re the type of person who hangs out with people who don’t even need drinks, or maybe you’re at a sex toy party where the entire point of the night is to talk about sex. It doesn’t matter, at some point, someone will talk about anal sex.

And the automatic response to taboo is there. Sure, people are willing to go buy fuzzy handcuffs and riding crops for newlyweds (because those are just jokes, right?) but any mention of this sex act overwhelms playful BDSM (and let’s not even get into the discussion of actually liking BDSM) and usually devolves into some anecdote about someone knowing this one girl who tried anal once when she was really drunk and it was horrible and OMG can you believe that?

Let’s be fair, I’m not saying everyone is anti-anal or that everyone should like anal. Obviously everyone has their own unique like and dislikes.

And I’m not saying that it’s the only taboo mentioned in the video that you can look at critically but if the point of this comedic piece is to satirically face the “misconceptions” about women and porn; why not face the misconceptions about women and how we enjoy sex, how we are sexual beings, and how many misconceptions we have of our own sexuality before we start poking fun at those weirdos who like to do those gross things.

I guess the real issue for me is that, while this video is kinda funny, it does just as much to perpetuate sexual misconceptions as it does to perhaps move people to question them. When in reality, the world needs some good conversations about sex: honestly and openly, that don’t leave people feeling like jerks.

So, as long as you like porn but don’t like it too much, or watch it too often, or watch anything too weird, you can just say, it’s ok because of course this has nothing to do with what you actually do in the bedroom, right?… that’s still missionary all the way…. right?

…. yeah that’s what I thought.

As usual, a lovely post. Sex has so many misconceptions and stigmas that are just dumb. What happens between consenting adults is their own business, however non-missionary it is. Just one more thing I miss about UHON, there are no subjects that are off the table, oh and sex toy parties.
