NSFW Weekends: Poetry Addition

Looking back at this post, I’ve decided I want to make it part of my goal to introduce my readers to poems/poets they might be unfamiliar with. And where else to begin but with poems that make you wanna do the nasty?

Once again, I will refer my readers to the fabulous Poets.org as a place to look for poetry on a theme or as a place to begin. Because, OMG, have you tried googling the phrase “erotic poetry” before?

It is SO not a good idea.

The great thing about lusty poetry is that it’s the exact opposite of googling for sex. Sometimes it’s subtle, often it’s heady, and sometimes it can surprise you.

One of my favorite sexy poetry lines ever, is the last line from Pablo Neruda’s “Everyday You Play.” Neruda has long been famous for his love poems and this poem, for the most part, focuses on images of devotion and while intimate, it is subtly sexy using nature imagery… and ends with the line:

I want
to do with you what spring does with the cherry trees.

And while relying on the subtlety and natural images that comes before it, this line kills me all on its own. Because, ask yourself, what does spring do to cherry trees? It makes them bloom, you say? Perhaps like a big and happy O? Just saying. Read the rest of the poem here.

Kim Addonizio is a new poet who delves into the sexy sometimes, and when I say “delves” I mean dives in, casting aside subtley for an honesty that is pretty sexy in her own right. Check out the beginning of her poem “What Do Women Want?” which you can also listen to her read here,

I want a red dress.
I want it flimsy and cheap,
I want it too tight, I want to wear it
until someone tears it off me.
I want it sleeveless and backless,
this dress, so no one has to guess
what’s underneath.

And that’s just the beginning of the poem! I highly reccomend finishing it for full enjoyment, if you get my drift 🙂
