I’m having one of those days. One of those days where I want to just submit to my own personal stereotype. And while, for a long time, it felt like there wasn’t a stereotype out there for me. Over the past couple of years, it’s become extraordinarily clear, I belong to the “Short Jewish Women With An Interest In Theater,” stereotype talked about in this article from The Onion.
If it hadn’t been made clear enough, two (not just one, two!) of my favorite shows have been reinforcing this stereotype down to the costuming decisions. Both Glee and Community have their own, short, domineering, patroness of the arts types and this article showed that they might as well share a closet
Seriously, way to undermine all feelings of individuality and realize you wear your geek style on your sleeve!
But honestly? As annoying as it is to have stereotypes be so strong across the board, and T.V. shows are often the worse playground for this sort, I kind of enjoy having an easily identifiable stereotype to belong to that is purely offensive.
What about you? What’s a stereotype that you belong to that doesn’t also offend you? Is there one? Should I be critiquing these shows where, right now, I’m only candidly observing?
Let me know what you think!
